Executive Summary

TWLM was founded 30 years ago as an LGBTQ-focused organization with the specific purpose to reach out to LGBTQ and mainstream communities to cultivate compassion, encourage a sense of common humanity, and overcome stigmas that prevented the broader community from facing and addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Today, TWLM’s mission is to serve Latinx, LGBTQIA+, and other underserved populations through advocacy, education, and building the next generation of leadership. We achieve this mission through six types of programs: (1) alcohol and drug abuse prevention services; (2) mental health advocacy and linkage to resources; (3) HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, counseling, and resource connection; (4) LGBTQIA+ health and wellness support groups; (5) universal healthcare access advocacy; and (6) LGBTQIA+, immigrant, and worker rights promotion. TWLM operates these projects with a social justice and community organizing model, where we empower members of the target population to address the problems and inequities they experience in their communities. Generally, TWLM projects evolve from the needs, passions, and interests of the members of its various support groups, where clients identify community issues, develop projects to address those issues, and carry out project activities themselves. While TWLM’s expert staff provide guidance and resources, TWLM empowers its clients to design and carry out community education and policy advocacy projects according to their unified vision. All TWLM direct service staff members are bilingual in English and Spanish, and most staff identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This lived experience enables us to understand and address the needs of our clients.
