Executive Summary

Sportsmen’s was founded in 1961 as the first indoor non-profit tennis club in the US by and for the African American community. Our mission has always been to build leaders on the court, in the classroom and in the greater community by providing academic, wellness and social development programs alongside recreational and competitive tennis instruction for youth and adults. We are committed to improving life opportunities for youth in Boston’s under-resourced Blue Hill Corridor while welcoming a diverse community from the Greater Boston area.

We have a six-decade history of investing in and supporting Boston’s most vulnerable low-income and minority youth and families. We have developed innovative solutions to address our community’s most pressing needs by: forging strong partnerships with area schools; building partnerships with the Department of Public Health and area shelters to engage vulnerable children and families; expanding our crisis support capacity as we increasingly encounter children affected by trauma; growing into a community hub for health resources through our Center for Community Wellness and partnership with Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH); and looking to the future with a capital campaign that will expand our facility, double our program capacity, and create a new emphasis on workforce development for non-college oriented high school youth.

Each year we serve 5,000 youth and 1,000 adults through transformative programs that include: free and low-cost after-school and summer academic support and enrichment; mentoring; tennis; health and wellness; and community building. We believe our deep, multifaceted approach is key to elevating families out of poverty, to reducing inequities and ultimately transforming our neighborhoods.
