Executive Summary

South Bronx United aims to help low-income, immigrant, and first-generation youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so that they can succeed in high school, college, careers, and their community. SBU reaches over 1,700 children and young people, ages 2-24, every year through programming on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. A network of staff, coach-mentors, and volunteers, many of whom call the Bronx home, foster meaningful connections and mentorship through a shared passion for soccer and commitment to the Bronx’s rich culture and diversity.

SBU’s core program, the SBU Academy, provides a comprehensive pathway from middle school to high school to college and careers for more than 200 immigrant, first-generation, and at-risk youth annually. Participating students attend 6-12 hours of programming each week during the school year--including academic enrichment, tutoring, or college prep, soccer training, and weekend soccer competitions--and a five-week, full-day academic, athletic, and experiential learning-based summer program. Since 2012, 100% of SBU Academy seniors have graduated high school, and nearly all (95%) go on to college.

Beyond this program, thousands of other youth have participated in community programs that provide safe places to play during out-of-school time, connect individuals to critical community resources, and offer workshops on college access, knowing legal rights, building healthy bodies and minds, and more. Social work services, immigration relief screenings, legal representation, and case management supports youth and families with a range of challenges that can keep youth from accessing higher education and climbing out of poverty.
