Executive Summary
We are the largest LGBTQ+ organization in Northern California. Much like the LGBTQ+ rights movement, we struggled for survival over much of our 45 year history. Originally a special assistance program for LGBTQ+ people, especially those with HIV/AIDS, we evolved to provide youth programs, peer support, and community resource navigation, but remained small and volunteer driven. As LGBTQ+ people gained legal rights, we became more integrated and deeply engaged with the community. Over the last decade, we diversified our leadership, increased the visibility of population disparities, advocated for public funding, and invested in partnerships to impact more LGBTQ+ people than anyone in Sacramento. In 2016 we had a $950,000 budget and 9 employees. Today, we have 52 staff positions, a nearly $6 million budget, and the broadest array of services offered by and for the local LGBTQ+ community. Our work is focused on the intersections of the most marginalized identities within our community including Black, Indigenous, and other queer and trans people of color, youth experiencing homelessness, people at high risk or living with HIV, seniors, victims of injustice, and low-income people. We support youth’s journey from homelessness to independent living through drop-in and housing services; reduce STI and HIV infections through testing, prevention, and linkage to care; decrease suicide, hospitalization, and incarceration through clinical therapy and peer support; create more affirming workplaces, schools, and healthcare services through advocacy, training, and legal assistance; and contribute to a culturally rich region through Sacramento Pride and dozens of community building activities.
