Executive Summary

Reality Changers prepares youth to become first-generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. It envisions a future where all young people have equitable access to thrive in education and to create lifelong pathways for success. Today, youth continue to battle long-standing challenges - underfunded schools and gang activity - with new challenges of increased social isolation and mental health stressors.

In 2001, Chris Yanov started Reality Changers with four students in a church basement. Since 2006, the organization has been based in City Heights, known for its ethnic diversity and high rates of poverty. Reality Changers supports nearly 400 high school students annually, with more than 3,300 having graduated from the program. The program’s graduates are fueling economic and social progress in their communities as they become first-generation small business owners and homeowners.

Starting in the 8th grade, Reality Changers programming creates a strong foundation of academic, personal, and community-building skills leading up to a student’s senior year of high school where the focus is on supporting students with applying to a 2- or 4-year school and applying for financial aid and scholarships. After graduation, students receive support through college and beyond, ensuring they have the resources and support system to graduate from college and be prepared for real-world success.

The majority of the staff, leadership, and volunteers identify with the student population, either racially/ethnically, socioeconomically, geographically, and/or as a first-generation student. Over the years, program graduates have become volunteers, staff members, and board members.
