Executive Summary

Nurses for Newborns (NFN) provides services and support to families during a critical time in their lives—before and after the birth of a baby—empowering them to promote their child’s health in their earliest months. The overall goal is to prevent infant death, and to promote safe, healthy pregnancy and infancy. NFN provides services through home visits to families in need of support, focusing on those with limited resources and babies who are medically fragile, or born to mothers with medical, mental health or substance use concerns or economic disadvantages.

Founded in Missouri and expanded to Tennessee, the surrounding circumstances of the served communities often lead to inequities in access to healthcare, nutritious food, and other essentials. Families of color and immigrants/refugees are hardest hit by this injustice. NFN was designed to clear the unfair roadblocks that can risk babies’ healthy development and even their lives.

Registered nurses, community health workers, and other qualified professionals provide health assessments, screen for common concerns, and teach positive parenting skills. Through home visiting, transportation barriers are eliminated. Services are provided in families’ homes at no cost and can be delivered or translated in any language. An extensive network of collaborating agencies and community volunteers ensure basic needs are addressed as well as providing critical supplies such as diapers, portable cribs, formula, and more.

The Nurses for Newborns model offers deep rewards. Data show infants are free from injuries, abuse and neglect, are growing and developing well and families maintain connections with health providers and other resources.
