Executive Summary

Based in New York City, New Heights helps underserved youth make it to and through high school and college. Through a variety of afterschool, weekend and summer programs, we work intensively over time with boys and girls who face barriers to equal learning opportunities, including their race and socioeconomic status, and empower them through academic and social emotional learning services. Our strategy is to engage our youth in an activity that they love, and in the process, introduce them to a world of new ideas and experiences that broaden their understanding of life and what they can accomplish. The youth at New Heights share a love for basketball, so we use intentionality to combine basketball with a network of services that include mentoring, tutoring, test prep, summer learning, financial literacy and life skills workshops, college advisement, campus visits, career exploration and other resources that are frequently out of reach for students who struggle economically. Over 85% identify as African-American, Hispanic or multi-racial. Many are the first in their families to graduate from college. By combining basketball with college and career readiness services, we leverage young people’s love for the sport and help them succeed in every area of their lives. Our coaches, educators and mentors – the majority of whom identify as BIPOC and share similar life experiences as our community – are positive role models who guide youth through adolescence into young adulthood and motivate them to develop the social, emotional, behavioral and academic assets necessary for future success.
