Executive Summary

NC Counts Coalition builds a healthy, just, and equitable North Carolina through cross-sector partnerships that advance systemic solutions for communities facing systemic barriers, including BIPOC communities, LGBTQ+, low-wealth, immigrant, and other communities. The Coalition upholds the values of inclusiveness, empowerment, integrity, resilience, collaboration, learning, and collective impact.

NC Counts currently has more than 120 member organizations across the state. The majority of these (59%) are led by and accountable to Black communities, followed by Latinx (22%), Asian (3%), Native American (2%), and Middle Eastern and North African (1%). Members also engage immigrants, refugees, people living with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ communities. Most members are small, community-based organizations that provide a wide range of services and civic engagement opportunities. The Coalition supports them to build capacity, access resources, and coordinate efforts across the state.

NC Counts’ team reflects communities that face systemic barriers. The majority of the organization’s staff and board identify as Black. The second most common identity is Latinx and some team members identify as LGBTQIA+ and first-generation Americans.

For the 2020 Census, NC Counts ran the largest census engagement campaign in NC history, which motivated more than 1 million individuals to participate and helped gain an additional seat in Congress and billions of dollars of census-derived funding. Since 2021, the organization has facilitated health information to more than 1.4 million individuals across 70+ counties and connections of: 37,000+ individuals to COVID-19 vaccines; 63,000+ individuals to community health workers; and 11,000+ individuals to transportation resources.
