Executive Summary

Founded in 2003, Native Movement is an Indigenous-led Alaska-based organization that envisions a world that embraces Indigenous values of reciprocity and respect with all beings. Their actions are grounded in ceremony, justice, and love in support of regenerative communities for all. They work throughout the state to build people power and support grassroots-led projects that ensure social justice, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, and the rights of Mother Earth. Their five-person board and twenty two person advisory board is entirely Alaska Native representing all parts of the state, and their staff of forty eight are dynamic and passionate builders of all genders and backgrounds – 70% Indigenous, 80% identifying as BIPOC, 75% women/femme identifying, 35% LGBTQ2S or non-binary identifying.

Native Movement understands that in order to make meaningful and lasting change it is critical to address root-causes to reshape oppressive systemic power structures. Investing in Indigenous and grassroots leadership is necessary for transformative and lasting change. They carry out their work in three intersectional “Basket” approaches: 1.) The Action and Advocacy Basket, in which they carry out numerous campaigns and organize with communities on issues of environmental justice, climate justice, and gender justice. 2.) The Movement Infrastructure Support Program, which is providing direct support to grassroots community initiatives through fiscal sponsorship, administrative support, shared resources and toolboxes, as well as regranting. 3.) The Community Education Program that provides numerous workshops and trainings, as well as facilitation of dialogues that deepen critical analysis toward building strong collaborations and more effective strategies. Throughout all their work, they center Indigenized worldviews, prioritize Indigenous narrative sovereignty, incorporate ceremony as strategy, and weave healing justice throughout all parts of their programming and work.
