Executive Summary

Since 1971, the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (LACLJ) has been a stalwart defender of low-income domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in Los Angeles County. We work with 1,000+ survivors annually who are predominantly female, Spanish speakers with limited or no English proficiency, and/or immigrants.

LACLJ’s governing body and staff reflect and represent the community of survivors who seek our help, with several being survivors themselves or who have family members impacted by violence. More than half (52%) of LACLJ’s Board of Directors are female, and 48% of board members are BIPOC (28% are Latine/Hispanic). LACLJ’s leadership team is entirely women, and most LACLJ staff are bilingual (English/Spanish). The racial/ethnic, cultural, linguistic backgrounds as well as gender and immigrant experiences that staff and leadership share with LACLJ clients allow us to build trust relationships with clients.

LACLJ is the only legal services agency in Los Angeles County exclusively serving victims of domestic, sexual- and gender-based violence. Our holistic approach of free legal representation paired with social services is critical to help survivors re-establish safety and security and build self-sufficiency and empowerment. We improve the wellbeing of clients by securing positive legal outcomes in matters such as restraining orders, child or spousal support, custody/visitation, and work authorization for immigrants, and by assisting survivors in obtaining public benefits and/or connecting to community resources. We empower survivors with the resources they need to take back control of their lives and successfully transition out of abusive situations.
