Executive Summary

Lawyers for Civil Rights provides free, life-changing legal support to people of color and immigrants.  As community lawyers, we serve as the pro bono legal arm of grassroots groups in immigrant communities and communities of color that would otherwise not have access to legal assistance.

Since our first major victory integrating Boston Public Schools in 1974, we have built a rich legacy of impact, promoting equity and justice in communities of color. In the past five years, we have mobilized thousands of volunteer attorneys from leading law firms to tackle groundbreaking advocacy with low-income people of color. This pro bono model drives change and creates a force multiplier effect: LCR’s work has an exponentially greater impact thanks to the thousands of hours donated by our volunteer network.

Long-term organizational objectives:

Racial equity: Leading groundbreaking cases challenging discriminatory and anti-immigrant policies to support underserved families in partnership with community-based organizations confronting inequities amplified by the pandemic.

Community Empowerment: Increasing legal literacy in immigrant communities and communities of color.

Democracy: Protecting our democracy through voting rights work focused on robust engagement with voters of color and youth;

Health Justice: Stabilizing the health and well-being of low-income people of color and immigrants in partnership with community-based health centers.

Economic Justice: Promoting the growth of small businesses launched by people of color, immigrants, and women to help close the wealth gap and break the trauma of generational poverty.
