Executive Summary
ICI is committed to the health and well-being of low-income individuals in Puerto Rico (PR) struggling with non- attended emergencies or routine situations within substance abuse, homelessness, HIV, and mental health. *US national reports evidence that 10% of adults will struggle with substance abuse. In Puerto Rico, this is 328,587 people. Nevertheless, in the island, less than 4,000 (1%) receive treatment in state and community facilities every year. *
Since its founding, ICI responds to the disproportionate demand for mental health and substance abuse services in PR with bold, high-impact solutions delivered by professionals in advanced street medicine and heal beyond clinic walls. ICI’s mobile teams deliver care in "alleys and under bridges", wherever those with no access are found. They establish relationships with the community, formal and informal leaders, public health workers, night round volunteers and providers building trust, avoiding duplication and eliminating barriers to care.
Key recent milestones are:
* Mobile health teams reverting more than 150 overdoses every year.
* The outpatient adult mental health clinic and substance abuse recovery program's 80% + full recovery track record (480/600).
* Advocating for access to testing and vaccination for homeless populations throughout COVID-19.
* Through Community-Based Prevention and Education annually reaching more than 3,000 adults and 2,300 at-risk children and youth. In all three location sites, neighbors and past beneficiaries of services are hired as staff. Board Members and volunteers are involved in: strategic planning, operations, and service evaluations, ensuring the organization is supporting and sustaining authentic community- centered solutions to solving health problems.
