Supporting children in Southeast DC is at the heart of our mission. Our holistic approach centers on partnership: connecting with the child, their family, school, and community - to ensure they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve over 600 children and families annually with a focus on three key levers for equity and economic mobility: educational attainment, family stability and safety and belonging.

Executive Summary

Since 1989, Horton’s Kids has used innovative and disruptive strategies to help residents living in under-invested Anacostia neighborhoods break the cycle of poverty. We take a three-pronged approach to driving economic mobility and fostering health equity –educational attainment, family stability, and safety and belonging:

Educational Attainment: Helping youth to stay in school and graduate with clear post-secondary plans is at the center of our economic mobility efforts. We make a 13+ year commitment to each child and their family, beginning in PreK and continuing through high school graduation. Horton’s Kids leverages data to help young people cultivate social-emotional skills that are protective against truancy, like growth mindset, perseverance, and problem-solving. We also work with students through our college and career readiness program to envision a productive future and to create post-secondary plans, whether that be going to college or directly into a career.

Family Stability: Early on, Horton’s Kids recognized that it is not enough to support young people. Instead, we take a whole-family, whole-community approach to our work. By offering on-site support in areas such as education, health and wellness, and family enrichment, Horton’s Kids addresses the multifaceted needs of residents while fostering a sense of belonging and strengthening community cohesion.

Safety and Belonging: One reason young people are not going to school is because of crime in the neighborhood. Some youth are afraid to leave their homes and others are unfortunately drawn into the web of criminality. Horton’s Kids addresses these barriers through the Safety and Belonging Taskforce, comprised of Horton’s Kids staff, government agencies, community leaders, City council members, law enforcement, and property management. The taskforce meets quarterly to find solutions to safety issues in the community.
