Executive Summary

FLAP, a Latina woman-led nonprofit, is the only organization in the Midwest whose mission is to improve working conditions and opportunities, free of charge and without regard to immigration status, for low-wage workers and their households specifically in the cannery, farms, greenhouse, landscaping, meat, nursery, packinghouse, poultry, restaurants, and snow plowing industries. It fulfills this mission through advocacy, community outreach and education, community legal education, information and referrals, fighting human labor trafficking, legal services, preventing family separations by helping immigrants secure dual citizenship for their children and facilitating access to technology and cash transfers. FLAP does not receive funding from the Federal Legal Services Corporation.

FLAP has more than 25 years long standing reputation for hiring from within the low-wage Latine community we serve that is directly impacted by structural racism. The organization’s Staff and Community Navigators are originally from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Italy, Honduras and Mexico and the majority of them immigrated to the U.S. looking for better working conditions and opportunities for their families.

Board of Directors are selected because of their work and/or connections with the plight of low-wage immigrant workers and their families who live and/or work in Illinois. They are Latines, Middle East and Caucasian. Many of them are Spanish speakers. They provide guidance on program and operating strategy and have fiscal oversight of the organization.
