Executive Summary
Since 2002, Community Health Council of Wyandotte County (CHC) has engaged the community in identifying and addressing health inequities; amplifying community voices, providing direct services, and operating as a community convener, organizer, and intermediary through our collective health improvement efforts.
We have a vibrant community, diverse in race/ethnicity (22% Black, 31% Hispanic/Latino, 11% RIM (refugee/immigrant/migrant)), culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, and language. Our staff mirrors this diversity - 39% Hispanic/Latino, 18% Black, 12% Asian, 6% American Indian, and 24% White. 3% of staff identify as non-binary gender identity, and at least 21% LGBTQ+ sexual orientation. 6% of our staff have a disclosed disability, and we speak over 13 languages.
But we also experience the worst health and social determinants of health outcomes in the state, including economic instability, built environment, access/quality of food, poor maternal and fetal health outcomes, education, and health care. Residents have less access to transportation, increased rates of poverty, and experience linguistic isolation and cultural-competence challenges daily.
CHC is intentionally, physically situated in the zip code with greatest need. Our doors are open and unlocked daily, with no gatekeeper, and with immediate access to Community Health Workers who assist residents with navigating the complex social service and health systems. We share resources, leverage partnerships, and build resident self-efficacy to increase access to vital resources.
We center community in the work, providing leadership development, employment opportunities, and civic engagement options both within our organization and on decision-making committees throughout the county, bi-state Kansas City metro, and state.
