Executive Summary
Baltimore Tree Trust is a Black-led, majority-Black nonprofit that plants trees in neighborhoods with the lowest tree coverage while training city residents to become the next generation of urban foresters. Since 2008, the organization has planted over 17,000 trees across the city through close partnerships with neighborhood stakeholders. Environmental justice is the guiding principle behind Baltimore Tree Trust’s mission to restore the city’s urban forest, and the organization prioritizes working in Black communities harmed by decades of deliberate underinvestment with disproportionately low rates of tree coverage compared to its surrounding affluent, majority-White areas. By targeting low-canopied communities, the organization strives to equitably distribute Baltimore’s tree canopy to make fresh air, well-shaded streets, and public health benefits provided by trees accessible to all.
Baltimore Tree Trust invests directly in individuals living in these communities by providing paid, hands-on training and career pathway opportunities. City residents who have an interest in urban forestry or become interested because of a Baltimore Tree Trust outreach event begin their career as a Neighborhood Forester which allows them to learn the complex process of tree planting, tree care, and how to operate hand tools and heavy equipment to transport trees safely. In addition to hands-on training, Neighborhood Foresters gain access to robust professional development opportunities, such as funds, paid time off, and mentorship to achieve certifications and licenses to enhance their qualifications. Because of these resources and opportunities, Neighborhood Foresters can become eligible for internal promotions that include title changes, advanced responsibility, and increased pay.
