Executive Summary

With over 15 million workers, the tipped service sector—which includes restaurants, personal services, and gig workers—is the largest private sector employer of women and the lowest-paying. The Transforming Gender Equity & Power Project grows the power of these essential women workers to transform their workplaces, build their wealth, and influence the political process affecting their lives.

When COVID-19 devastated the sector, One Fair Wage raised $23 million in relief funds and collectivized the voices of 220,000 workers and nearly 1,000 newly-supportive employers for industry-wide change, engaging these workers and employers in a unique collaboration with policy advocates, consumers, leadership trainers, and culture shifters. The Project will result in raised wages and reduced sexual harassment for millions of women workers, hundreds more women, particularly women of color, becoming political/industry leaders, and measurable change in the public’s understanding of the essentialness and professionalism of women in this immense and growing sector.
