Executive Summary

The Domestic Violence Justice Project will support women in communities of color to conduct research, build coalitions to advocate for justice system reform, and lead community efforts to transform norms and behavior. In 52 states and territories, we will build the capacity of small organizations embedded in communities of color to research survivors' experiences and identify obstacles to help-seeking and justice. These organizations will build coalitions to leverage their data, raising awareness and improving justice system responses in their state. Academic researchers will scale the model to a three-year research and advocacy project in eight communities of color around the U.S. Findings will inform the culturally-specific design of a community empowerment initiative, which will shift norms and behavior through survivor-led support groups, adolescent peer leader programs, and groups for men who harm. The database housing the research will serve as an unparalleled resource informing policy, legislation and practice regarding domestic violence.
