Executive Summary
Of the 200,000 veterans that transition out of the military each year, 30,000 are women. The Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University is higher education's first interdisciplinary academic institute singularly focused on advancing the post-service lives of the nation's military veterans and their families. We deliver unique and innovative programs in career, vocations, entrepreneurship education and training to active-duty military spouses/life partners, as well as tailored programs to veterans of all eras. In addition, we provide research, policy analysis, and program evaluation to enhance service delivery for the 22.5 million veterans throughout the United States and their families. We offer the nation's premier entrepreneurship and small business management program exclusively for military-connected women. First initiated by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration, our program leverages public/private partners to achieve its mission. We also prepare veterans and military-connected individuals with the skills, knowledge, and tools to launch a successful and meaningful career in politics – a natural fit for participants with an affinity for public service. Instruction is provided by veterans with first-hand experience running for office, experts in the field, and public policy faculty from the nation's top-ranked graduate school in public affairs. With this funding, we would expand the reach of our programs to serve more women, advance their businesses, and increase the number of women in local and state government.
