Executive Summary
Safety Through Respect supports Indigenous women of Alaska, Hawaii, and the continental U.S. to develop an organizing curriculum to reteach respect, and launch a public awareness initiative to decrease social tolerance for violence against Native women. This project institutes the changes needed to remove barriers to the safety of Native women and provide a process for national public healing. Traditionally Indigenous women were held sacred. Today, homicide is a leading cause of death and rates of violent victimization of Native women more than double that of other populations. Surviving colonization through traditional beliefs, Native women live with a legacy of dehumanization. This systemic racism woven into the layers of the federal government, the economy, and culture will continue until those who do not suffer the violence no longer remain indifferent. Indigenous women's power and influence will be accelerated by leading the Nation to address the crisis of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women.
