Executive Summary
Gender gaps in pay and authority are rooted in occupational segregation, with White men occupying high authority roles in the best-paid professions and women of color (WoC) occupying low authority roles in the lowest paid professions. Increasing WoC’s access to, and success in, high-paying jobs in growth sectors of the economy will shrink the gender pay gap and increase WoC’s economic power and influence. Our innovative program uses bottom-up and top-down strategies to create transformational change. From the bottom-up, an evidence-based leadership development program will help WoC recognize and overcome barriers to career advancement. From the top-down, a “WoC Tech Coalition” (pronounced ‘woke’) of institutional leaders in education and industry publicly commits to, and acts upon, evidence-based principles to advance WoC in tech. By integrating these two strategies, we will create opportunities for aspiring WoC and established leaders to co-create transformational change in the tech industry.
