Executive Summary

The 2019 State of Women in Academic Medicine Report revealed that 27% of women faculty felt disrespected in academic medicine workplaces. Negative perceptions about women underrepresented in medicine contribute to lost opportunity for advancement. We propose to challenge bias narratives against women underrepresented in medicine and to promote the advancement of women in academic medicine by creating a consortium of minority serving institutions (MSI) focused on nurturing the pipeline to medicine for women underrepresented in medicine. We will establish an online community, "MSI to Medicine:(M2M)" to highlight women underrepresented in medicine through mentoring, professional/personal development, media/publicity, job opportunities, and alumni engagement. The outcome of these efforts will also benefit minority serving institutions that do not currently have an organized network for collaboration. Simultaneously, combating negative perceptions of women underrepresented in medicine with testimonials of success will lead to increase power and influence for all women in academic medicine. Ultimately, this proposal will benefit minority communities across the country by increasing the number of women in medicine who are currently underrepresented and increasing the community's access to them.
