Executive Summary
Emergency management is not diverse: 82% of leaders in this field are white and male. As disasters worsen and society changes, this issue is crucial. Research indicates that disasters increase poverty rates and the racial wealth gap, and push women back into traditional gender roles. More holistic resilience and equity is possible, if disaster management were to resemble the country and include diverse perspectives. This project aims to increase female leadership – especially Black, Indigenous, and other women of color, and women with disabilities – in disaster management and change the public perception of gender in this field. We are building a pathway from high school through college to advanced careers in disaster resilience. Our programming includes mentorship and sponsorship from current women leaders for the next generation; internships; professional development opportunities; interactive workshops; and a media strategy to change the perception of disaster management as a male-only field.
