Executive Summary
Water is life. One-third of the U.S. economy would grind to a halt without clean, reliable water. Yet there is a growing water crisis – from contamination to shortages, to shutoffs. We need courageous leadership to solve America's water crisis. Jobs at public water agencies offer great pay and benefits while providing an essential community service. Today, these jobs are predominantly held by older white men. A "silver tsunami" is coming: one-third of water workers will retire soon. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to elevate women – especially Black, Indigenous, and other women of color – into the highest echelons of water leadership. With support, we will train 125 early and mid-career women so they rise into executive leadership; support 200 existing women executives in public water agencies so that they thrive; and build a network of 1,000 women who, together, will shift culture, norms, and narratives in the water sector.
