Executive Summary
Tech has a gender equity problem; the industry is overrepresented by men. When women enter the workforce, very few stay long-term and fewer are in leadership positions. Disrupting Tech proposes to focus not only on recruitment, but also on retention and changing the organizational barriers that limit women's advancement. We propose innovations not previously pursued in tech, bridging workforce development strategies with workplace equity practices. Urban Institute will employ 2,000 women in apprenticeships throughout the tech sector, developing the leadership skills of 500 women mentors, conducting equity assessments of 10 employers to help modify their practices and build supports for women to succeed. Using evidence-based strategies and robust monitoring and evaluation, we will build a knowledge database about best practices needed to support and fast-track women in tech and make the industry more gender equitable.
