Executive Summary
Witnessing and experiencing violence impedes children’s healthy development and learning. It inhibits positive relationships, provokes low self-esteem and emotional distress, and can lead to self-harm and aggressive behavior. Communities across Uganda need strategies that simultaneously transform cultures of violence and promote healthy child development.
Responsible, Engaged, And Loving (REAL) Fathers is an evidence-based, community-led mentoring program for fathers of toddler-aged children that teaches positive parenting and nonviolent discipline. The Ugandan government has endorsed the program, and it is ready to be adapted to Uganda’s regional cultures and integrated into the national Early Childhood Development (ECD) system.
Impact and Innovations Development Centre and its partners will:
- Adapt and scale REAL to five new sub-regions;
- Train community-based ECD resource persons to implement REAL; and
- Build local government capacity to monitor and evaluate REAL. These efforts will benefit over one million children and catalyze a positive fatherhood movement throughout Uganda.
